Effects of a Sprinkler on Evacuation Dynamics in Fire

چکیده
A fire in an enclosed space, such as a room in a building, is generally called a compartment fire. To prevent the compartment fire, a sprinkler for first-aid fire-fighting is installed in rooms. However, it is difficult to determine the degree to which smoke generation and the fire spreading will be inhibited when sprinklers are on. In particular, demonstrating evacuation behavior assuming an actual fire is impossible. In this study, we evaluated an effectiveness of the sprinkler by numerical simulations. To consider evacuation dynamics, a real-coded cellular automata (RCA) was used, where we can freely set the direction and velocity of an evacuee based on a floor field model. To consider the situation in the room fire, we used a simulator called Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). Two cases with and without the sprinkler were compared to see the validity of the sprinkler on evacuation dynamics. The effect of smoke and the expansion of the fire-spreading region were discussed. Results show that, since the fire-spreading region disappears when the sprinkler is actuated, the evacuation time decreases. Even though the sprinkler is actuated, the smoke generated at the beginning of a fire diffuses inside the whole room. However, the duration of evacuees being overwhelmed by smoke is less, because the amount of smoke generated by the pyrolysis reaction is much decreased.

Modelling Aspects of Sprinkler Spray Dynamics in Fires
S prinklers are used extensively in a variety of fire protection applications. These systems are required to perform effectively over a wide range of extremely harsh and complex operating conditions. The sprinkler performance depends on the initiation, formation, dispersion and surface cooling characteristics of the sprays created by these devices. The behaviour of sprinkler sprays is strongly ...
متن کاملA Multi-Grid Model for Evacuation Coupling With the Effects of Fire Products
The effects of fire products on pedestrians are introduced into a multigrid evacuation model, in which the space is discretized into smaller grids with the size of 0.1 m × 0.1 m and each pedestrian occupies 5×5 grid sites. The effects of fire products on pedestrians consist of two parts: the desired movement direction and the step frequency. The data of fire products obtained from the simulatio...
متن کاملFactors Influencing Failure Emergency Evacuation in Work Environments during Fire
One of the necessary measures of saving human life in emergency situations, such as fires, is the safe and swift evacuation of people. The prerequisites for this are to anticipate, identify, and eliminate factors preventing people from leaving buildings in a timely and safe manner while moving them to a safe place [1]. The occurrence of errors caused by engineering, design, human, and psycholog...
متن کاملSimulation of the course of evacuation in tunnel fire conditions by FDS+Evac
In this paper, simulation of fire in a short 2-lane road tunnel and its evacuation are described. Two traffic situations in the tunnel and their impact on people evacuation in fire conditions are analyzed. For simulation of the tunnel fire, the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) system, version 5.5.3 based on advanced CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) fire model is used. The evacuation of people in...
متن کاملSimulation of Metro Train Fire in an Underground Station of Tehran Metro Line 7
In this research a fire scenario was simulated in one of the stations of the line 7 of Tehran's subway system. The Line 7 is under construction and the ventilation system is under design. Fire was set for a stopping metro train at the platform of the station. A 160 meter length eight-car metro train with the forth wagon on the fire was studied. The heat release rate is based on a quadratic f...
